Mani Tsendon

‘Mani Tsendon’ means the overnight chanting of the six-syllable mantra OM MANI PADME HUM which is the mantra of Compassion Buddha which completely purifies the four defeats of breaking the four vows of self-liberation and the five uninterrupted negative karmas. In short this is the essence of all Dharma  that’s the purest Dharma.

This program is organized by the school’s Cultural Committee which is led by the Assistant Headmaster with the religious teacher and the two music teachers of the school. All the staff and the students above class 6 participated in the program in three shifts – 7 p.m. to 12 midnight, 12 midnight to 3 a.m. and 3 a.m. to 6 in the morning. The expense for this is mostly dependent on the donation given by the staff and the students because we consider such rituals important to eliminate the evil and remove the obstacles shadowing the school. This also helps in bringing good health and prosperity in the community free from any kind of hindrances

ANNUAL G.K. MEGA QUIZ CONTEST

The annual G.K. mega quiz contest was organized by the TGT Social teachers supported by the other subject teachers. This year unlike the previous years we could see a big change in asking the questions. There were quiz questions almost on all the subjects such as General Knowledge, Science, Mathematics, Information Technology, Central Tibetan Administration etc. Moreover there were separate quiz masters for each subject.

Around 24 students, all toppers from their class took part in the contest representing their own class. The quiz lasted around two hours and every one of us learned many new things. Children definitely got the opportunity to upgrade their knowledge about all the subjects within this short period of time.

DELEK HOSPITAL LAUNCHES TO MINIMIZE TB IN TIBETAN CHIDREN

To encounter the widespread disease of Tuberculosis (TB) in the exile community from a grass root level and ensuring the safety of the future generations, the Tibetan Delek Hospital, in association with John Hopkins University, launched a new project titled, “ZERO TB IN TIBETAN KIDS: Training to End TB Now’.

So a team of Dr. Kunchok Dorjee, coordinator of the Zero TB program accompanied by four nurses from Delek Hospital visited our school and through his presentation, highlighted an alarming information regarding the higher average of TB patient in the exile Tibetan community than that of India.

The procedure includes the case finding of the disease in the family and in case of doubt they are advised to go for further proper tests. If a person is found with the bacteria the precautionary steps were taken to prevent it from spreading.

The whole school underwent the procedure and fortunately not a single serious case was diagnosed. Thanks to the whole team of Delek Hospital for initiating such huge steps in eliminating the TB disease from the community. We wish them all the best of luck in achieving their mission soon in the near future.

HIMACHAL LAUNCHES MEASLES-RUBELLA VACCINATION CAMPAIGN

Seeking to eliminate measles and rubella in Himachal Pradesh, the state government has launched a vaccination campaign against the viral diseases, which cause deaths of thousands of children in India annually.

The vaccination programme, which will cover 18.67 lakh children between nine months and 15 years age group, was launched by Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur. The vaccine of measles-rubella (MR) would be provided in 18,200 schools, anganwadi and health centres across the state.

Thus our school too enjoyed the benefit of this campaign and the children under the age of 15 were vaccinated timely.

TIBET DAY

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in his recent speech in Oregon, US said, “When anyone wants to investigate Buddhist thought today, Tibetan language is the best means through which to do it.” He added, “Besides the acquisition of modern education, the preservation of Tibetan language, culture and Buddhism is important.”

Thus keeping this in mind every year in our school we observe ‘Tibet Week’ or ‘Tibet Day’ to promote and preserve the rich culture and heritage of Tibet. This year on ‘Tibet Day’, the Tibetan Committee members organized various programs throughout the day.

The seniors and the junior students had their programs separately. For the senior students they had the Tibetan Debate Contest for class 9, Tibetan Repartee Contest for class 8 and the recitation of love and patriotic poems and songs by the class 10 students.

The junior students started with the singing assembly and they had afternoon program full of dramas and plays.

It was a day full of learning as well as entertainment. Everyone performed extremely well. Good job!

INTER HOUSE ATHLETIC MEET 2017

Games and sports form an integral part of the school curriculum. It is our constant endeavor to involve more and more students to take part in the various games. The academic performance is significant simultaneously the participation in the sports and games is equally important. Participation in the sports provides and builds ones confidence, leadership qualities, team work, provides energy and improves stamina.

This year in the Inter House Athletic Meet function, for the Chief Guest we are privileged to have the Honorable Secretary, Department of Health (CTA) Mr. Tsegyal Dranyi la and the dignitaries from TCV Head Office, Dharamsala along with the Directors and the Principals of the sister schools.

For the events, each and every House tried to perform and gave their best but as it is universal that in every competition one wins and one loses so this year Nyatri and Trisong Houses had almost neck to neck competition as compared to the other two Houses namely Songsten and Triral.

INTRODUCTION TO FALUN DAFA or FALUN GONG

Falun Dafa or Falun Gong is an advanced practice of Buddha school self-cultivation, founded by Mr. Li Hongzhi, the practice’s master. It is a discipline in which “assimilation to the highest qualities of the universe – Zhen, Shan, Ren meaning Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance (Tolerance) – is the foundation of practice. It is a practice to train our mind, body and soul.

Ms. Chris, a practitioner of Falun Dafa came to our school to introduce the ‘FALUN DAFA’. She told us that it is practiced by many people in the world and this practice was specifically banned in China by the Chinese government. She narrated a bit of its history how it came into existence and how the Chinese government persecuted those who practice Falun Dafa in China. She even taught fine basic exercises of Falun Dafa almost to the whole school. Around more than 800 students and 50 teachers took part in the three sessions she took in a day. It was indeed a new venture for everyone.

Gandhi Jayanti

Gandhi Jayanti is a national festival celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is famously known as the ‘Father of Nation’. It is always celebrated on 2nd October every year all over India. The United Nations General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that this day 2nd October to be celebrated as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’.

In our school too every year we celebrate this ocassion with utmost dedication and sincerity. This year the Chief Guest for the function was Mr. Pyar Chand, the Pradhan of Lower Chauntra. This is basically to build close and better relationship with out Indian brothers and sisters. We presented before him the Hindi Poetry recitation from class 6 to 8, followed by the Hindi patriotic songs by class 9 students. Children and the teachers in charge did wonderful jobs and they made our day.

In the after we did the social work and contributed little in the ‘SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN’ promoted by the Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. The class 8 students went to clean the market and the remaining classes did the campus cleaning in and around our school campus which included our Indian neighbors surrounding too. It was indeed an eventful and meaningful day for every one of us.

EDUCATION TOUR TO AMRITSAR

Education tour or trip means more than simply leaving the school ground. It is one of the most significant events both for the school and the students. It is important and essential because of the following reasons.

• It gives opportunity for the children to build closer bonds with their classmates.
• It provides them to experience new environments and enjoy a day away from the classroom.
• It gives students exposure to the places they might not otherwise visit.
• It enforces them to connect the classroom lessons to the real world etc.

So this year the class teachers and the subject teachers of class 9 collaboratively initiated to take their students for the one day educational trip to the holy city of the Sikhs – Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple. Not only that they also visited the Pushpa Gujral-Science City, Jalandar. It was a large centre with lots of adventurous parks and planetarium, boating facility etc.

Overall, it was a lot of learning in one day! Both the teachers and the students enjoyed the excursion to the fullest.

TCV CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST

The TCV Creative Writing Contest in both the language Tibetan and English for the children above class 6 was conducted on 26 August 2017, Saturday. The time scheduled to this activity was 9 to 10.30 a.m. for Tibetan and from 11 to 12.30 a.m. for English. Each class level had different topics to deal with. The students got a very opportunity to express their views and opinions on the topics they were allotted. Those who are bit lazy in writing hopefully realized how important the writing is and why they need to do it on a daily basis.

The writing was organized in the school hall and the main responsibilities were taken by the respective subject committee Chairpersons. The school authority and the other teachers equally extended and contributed their help and support in creating this program a successful one.

INTER TIBETAN SCHOOL GIRLS’ BASKET BALL TOURNAMENT

It was a two day tournament organized by our school but sponsored by Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA). The participating teams were TCV Dharamsala (Upper), TCV Dharamsala (Lower), TCV Gopalpur, TCV Suja, TCV Chauntra and STS Chauntra.

English Week

English language learning is essential and important for many reasons. It is the language which majority of the people use to communicate with one another. It is the language which is used in most of the resources from where we get lot of knowledge and information such as the book, internet etc.

Thus to make children learn the language easily the teachers do perform lot of activities in their respective classrooms but to bring more awareness among the children every year we observe this one day in a year as ‘English Day’.

This year it was observed on 18 September 2017 but the preparation for this day was started more than a month before under the guidance of the English and Social Committee Chairperson, Mr. Tenzin Dhondup la.

The day started with the singing assembly. Children from class 3 to 10 have participated in this program. The morning assembly was specially held on the football ground and the children along with the English teachers sang two songs namely, ‘Kindness’ and ‘Mr. Manners Matters’ with actions. Everybody loved this.

Then we had the Inter Class 9 and 10 English Extempore Contest, followed by the Inter Class 7 and 8 Spelling Bee Contest. In the afternoon we had the Favorite Character Ramp Walk and finally the Nursery Rhymes presentation by the class 6 and below.

The programs went very well and smoothly. More than 500 children participated in the activities. The power packed performances of the children made it even more enjoyable and memorable. Thanks to each and everyone who lent their helping hands in making this a great event.

INTER HOUSE MARATHON RACE COMPETITION

The name ‘Marathon’ comes from the legend of Philippides or Pheidippides, the Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon which took place in August or September, 490 B.C. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming, “We have won!” before collapsing and dying.

So in our school also marathon race is yet again one of the most exciting events in the school and everyone enjoys watching the athletes run. So to participate in it, we have four main divisions and they are the Senior Boys, Inter Boys, Junior Boys and the Girls’ Open division. As many as 180 students both girls and boys have participated in it.

SCIENCE DAY

Why do we need to learn Science as one of the subjects in schools? The question arises in everyone’s head and probably these are the few reasons why we need to.

2. Awareness about technology

3. How to consereve natural resources

4. Instills survival skills

Science, as a subject is universal and knows no boundaries. People at present live in the ‘Age of Science’. It is taught in the schools to turn our children into intelligent citizens who can appreciate and enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature. To make them efficient in all walks of life and should take delight in the wealth of culture of past generations and civilizations. It affords knowledge of certain facts and laws and helps in achieving the main object of education.

In our school, the ‘Science Day’ was observed on 11 September 2017. The day started with the morning function with awesome presentations from the teachers and the children. The primary classes came up with some beautiful songs related to Science.

Followed by children’s Science Project exhibition where there were lots of working models and children show cased their talents, skills and creativity. The award for best working model was bagged by Pema Wangdi and Tenzin Khedup of class 8D. They have prepared a ‘Hydraulic Bull dozer’.

The afternoon program was interesting and innovative. It was called ‘Marsh Mellow Challenge”. It was a competition of building the tallest tower out of spaghetti noodles and other stuff. The position was again bagged by class 8 students.

Overall it was a complete educative, informative and an entertaining program. Hats off to all the Science teachers! We applaud for their hard work and effort.

PARENTS-TEACHERS’ MEETING

The Parents and teachers’ meeting is also considered one of the pivotal programs of the school because our children they mostly spend their time here in the school away from their own home. The school takes the major responsibilities of educating and the development of the overall growth of the children. Yet the parents’ contribution is also significant. They also need to know and should involve in the children’s growth. They need to update where their children are in terms of mental, physical and academic status.

We hope to organize such meetings minimal of two times in a year in each term. So the meeting of the First term was held on 8 September 2017. We are happy to announce that this time there were quite a lot of parents who came to take part in it. As compared to last year the number was much increased. This shows that the parents nowadays are aware of their own responsibilities of the growth and the development of their children.

The meeting started with the speech by the school Principal, Mr. Passang Tsering la. He shared about the school facilities, activities, and mainly about the remodeled assessment scheme of Class 10, Board Examination 2017-18. The school Headmaster Mr. Karma Tashi la read out the SA-1 result.

After that the parents individually met with their children’s class and subject teachers and were able to enquire about their children everything in detail. The meeting went very well.

Staff Day

Since 1962, 5th September all over India is celebrated as ‘Teacher’s Day’ in the loving memory of the former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on 5th September 1888. He was a famous teacher, academic philosopher and the second President of India. 

In TCV schools, we have a unique culture of celebrating it as ‘Staff Day’ because we believe that in the upbringing and overall growth of children it’s not only the teachers who work hard but the other staff members put equal effort and contribution in making our them better human beings and a self reliant people. On the reciprocal, it is the day where the students get the opportunities to showcase their feelings of gratitude towards their teachers and the staff members for their hard work.

The ‘Staff Day’ this year was as good as it used to be. The children lead by the school captains and the prefects made the day a memorable for all. The day started with the morning function, with a few song and dance items, followed by the delicious meals and football tournament between the staff member teams and the evening variety show.

Overall it was a fun-filled and action pact day. We want to thank our ex-students for all their lovely messages and good wishes. All our children in and outside Chauntra made us feel so special. Thanks to each and every one of them.

Tibetan Democracy Day

The 57th anniversary of the Tibetan Democracy Day was celebrated with tradition in our school this year. The Chief Guest of our function was Mr.Tsering Dorjee , the Chairman of the Tibetan Local Assembly, Dege Division, Bir. The school Principal gave the introductory speech narrating the history of how we were blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with this democratic government 57 years ago in 1960. Every country in this world has to struggle and fight for a democratic government in the past and even now but we, Tibetans are very lucky to have His Holiness the Dalai Lama as our leader who without being asked gave us complete right to the Tibetans to follow the democratic system and gave full authority to people’s elected leaders.

Then we had the Chief Guest’s speech followed by the musical instrument playing competition between the students of class 5 and 6. The class 5S students won the competition. Then we had three Tibetan circular group dance (GORSHE) by three classes from 6 to 8 respectively. After that some prize distribution, the tradition scarf and certificates were given to the students for Tibetan creative writing contest conducted by CTA last year. We felt proud that some of our students were also there among the list.

Finally the vote of thanks speech was given by the school Headmaster. He thanked everyone who participated in the program. Overall the day turned out to be educative, informative and enjoyable for every one of us.

INTER CLUB FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Inter club football tournament in TCV School Chauntra is held every year in the month of August. It is a pride and prestigious moment for every Chauntrians because no other schools have such large number of football clubs as we have. Like every year this year also we had around 56 clubs or teams to participate in this tournament. The tournament was mainly supervised by the Games Committee of the school and the main responsibilities were taken by the Students’ Council.

The tournament started on 2 August 2017 with the opening match played between Jampa Ling FC and Amay Karing FC and it closed on 30 August 2017 with the final match between Jampa Ling FC and Dhangma United FC.  The other matches were played one after the other and everyone got equal chance to participate and show case their talents in playing football in the tournament.

Summative Assessment Result Declaration

The First Summative Assessment of class 3 to 8 was done from 24th to 31st July 2017. The class five and below has the grading system. Therefore there was no specific result declaration for them as such but the class 6 to 8 has. So their result was declared recently.

1) Number of children who scored 75% and above 7 33 students

2) Number of children who scored 80% and above 20 students

3) The child who topped from the whole middle section (Class 6 to 8) was

Tenzin Dhundup Tamang (6D) with 89.8%

4) The Home which topped in this SA -1 exam is Home number 15 with the average

percentage of 31.9 out of 50.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY ELIMINATE HEPATITIS

The World Hepatitis Day is observed on 28 July every year to bring the world together under one single theme to bring awareness of the global burden of the deadly viral hepatitis and to influence real change.

At the 69th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, 194 governments adopted WHO’s Global Strategy on Viral Hepatitis, which includes a goal of eliminating hepatitis B and C in the next 13 years. The community responded by launching NOhep, the first ever global movement to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

So this year TCV School Chauntra under the direction of the Department of Health (CTA) Central Tibetan Administration and our school’s Health Committee carried out the following activities to make this day a meaningful & educative and informative to everyone. As the children below class 8 were having their exams, the 9 and 10 students could only participate in them. The activities were Art and Essay competition and a short distance marathon. The junior students were also made aware of the day and its significance by putting up posters around the school corridors. They were access to the information from these display charts and the slogans.

Choekhor Duechen

‘Choekhor Duechen’ in Tibetan is the festival of ‘Turning the Wheel of Dharma’ is one of the four major Buddhist holidays. It occurs on the fourth day of the sixth Tibetan lunar month. This was when Buddha after attaining his enlightenment, he turned the Wheel of Dharma and preached his sermon for the first time, at Sarnath, Varanasi (India) by teaching the ‘Four Noble Truths’.

So here in our school we commemorated the event with a grand (SOL-TSOG) offering to Buddha acknowledging his kindness to have turned the Wheel of Dharma to protect all sentient beings from delusions and sufferings. This grand religious ritual was organized by our school Cultural Committee and children above class 7 and the staff members participated in it.

ANIMAL (DOG) CARE CLUB, TCV SCHOOL CHAUNTRA

“Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.”

As quoted above, His Holiness always says that we need to care and have concern for others’ well being as we care for ourselves. Parallel to this here in TCV Chauntra we have a very special committee called ‘Dog Care Club’ who looks after the stray dogs in the school. It is one of the oldest clubs in our school lead by Mrs. Tenzin Dolker, our senior Science teacher. It has been more than a decade since she has been looking after the dogs in our school premises. She takes the main charge and the responsibility and she is backed by some of our students who volunteer to help her in this mission. The task they perform is extremely commendable and is not everyone’s cup of tea. They risk their own safety to create a healthy and disease free environment for others.

Here are some of the things they do beside their daily chores

to vaccinate the dogs against rabies, parvo-virus.

to treat dogs from both ecto-parasitic and endo-parasitic infection

to sterilize all dogs in and around our school campus

So on 13 July 2017 with the collaboration of our school and the Tibet Charity, Dharamsala, a veterinarian accompanied by two of his assistants vaccinated and sterilized all the stray dogs in and around our school premises so that the school remain safe and healthy from animal diseases.

We express our gratitude to the whole team for creating such a safe and sound environment for all of us residing here. We truly appreciate your selfless act and generosity towards these innocent creatures. Hats off!

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Birthday

On 6th July 2017, we celebrated one of the most blissful days of the year as it is the born day of our beloved His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. We started this auspicious day with a gathering of staff and students above class VII for Sangsol (incense burning) prayer.

The programme started at 8:00 and the actual function started at 9 am with a lighting of butter lamp by our school Principal, Mr. Passang Tsering la and offering of white scarf by the whole staff for His Holiness portrait.  The school Principal delivered the introductory speech. . He talked about the life history of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and his blessing to the whole world.

After that, the highlight of the event was the inauguration and the launch of the TCV School Chauntra’s LOTER NEWS which is to inform about the activities hot happenings in and around the school.  This month we brought the news in Tibetan and hopefully in the near future we would be able to alternate it with English. It’s a monthly news edition.

The ‘Readers of Dalai Lama’ is yet another programme which is going around in the school for whole year. This year, more than 100 students have participated in it and read different books of His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama. Some of the students did PowerPoint presentation on the books they have read and what they understood from it.  

The morning programmed ended with the vote of thanks speech by our school Headmaster Mr. Karma Tashi la. Overall it was a meaningful and time worth spent event.

The afternoon programmed started at 2:45 pm with a soccer tournament between Staff team and School Students’ team. The game ended with the victory of the School Student team with a score of 3 and 4 respectively.

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING

By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

So building on the success of last year, the theme for 2017 is: “Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe.” It is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

Therefore today during the morning assembly, the school’s Health Committee led by our Head Nurse, Mrs. Sonam Sangmo gave a talk with the power point presentation to bring awareness among our children about the harmful effects and the consequences of indulging in drug or substance abuse. The talk began with the introduction of this year’s theme and the related issues.

It was educative and informative for the children to think and avoid from involving and indulging in such disastrous activity.

Dolma Tsedon ( A night long prayer session )

Every year the Cultural Committee of the school organizes some important prayers in the school and one among them is the night long prayer session of the Goddess Tara. Tara, who Tibetans call ‘Dolma’ is commonly thought to be a Bodhisttva or Buddha of compassion and action, a protector who comes to our aid to relieve us of physical, emotional and spiritual suffering.

Tara has 21 major forms, each of which has different color and spiritual attribute. Of these 21 forms, two are especially popular among Tibetan people & White Tara, who is associated with compassion and long life, and Green Tara, who is associated with enlightened activity and abundance.

So here in school we try to impart holistic education to our children. We are not only concerned about the children’s modern education but we also try to connect them spiritually. So this is one particular activity where the prayer starts from 7 p.m. in the evening and lasts till 6 a.m. the next morning in the school hall. The staff and children have 3-5 hours shift to complete the whole session.

The main aims and objectives of holding such prayer is

for long and healthy life of His Holiness the 14th  Dalai Lama

to save and protect ourselves from disease, fear, anxiety, suffering, disasters, troubles and negative karmas.

to overcome mental, physical and emotional blockages and also blockages in relationships.

SUMMER FETE

The school organizes two Fetes in a year & one in spring and one in summer. The summer fete is yet again one of the most awaited events held in the month of June when school reopens for a fresh start right after the summer break. So this year too we had our school’s summer fete on Friday, 23 June 2017. The event is carried forward as same as the spring fete with the full cooperation from both the staff and the students.

Children enjoy and experience new dishes and involve in playing exciting games. The school organized the fete on the large football ground full with different stalls for the children to explore. The income that we receive from this particular event is spent on the school’s Cultural programs and related events.

Such event educates our children to be more self reliant, cooperative and motivate them to become a contributing member of the society. Children learn a lot of things under the guidance of the elders and by observing them.

MATH DAY

Math Day is observed every year in the school to encourage and arouse interest in students to learn Math more. This year also the Math Committee organized different activities to make this day more enthusiastic and memorable for the learners. One among them is a complete new activity this year and it was the ‘Math Extempore’ for the senior classes. Every child had to have the knowledge about the Math terms and related issues. During the real contest, the serial numbers of the children were picked randomly and they were made to speak about the topic they got. This aroused excitement and made each and everyone responsible in the learning scenario. Most importantly it provided platform for everyone to speak and showcase their knowledge about Math.

The Junior section Math teachers organized ‘Math Quiz’ for those little children. They were very excited and shown keen interest in learning the subject.

In short the event went successfully well in terms of organization and participation.

OBITUARY

On Friday, 16 June 2017, Mr. Ugen Choephel, one of our senior Tibetan teachers passed away at the age of 61 after a brief illness. The news saddened the whole school and came as a complete shock to everyone of us. As soon as we heard about his sudden unfortunate demise, a prayer was held in the school hall and the staff members rushed to his staff quarter to console and help the deceased family. The school’s Staff Welfare Committee took the main responsibilities under the guidance of the school authorities and distributed the work among the staff members. Every one whole heartedly stood by the family in this unfortunate mishap.

It was finally today that his body was cremated at the auspicious and sacred place of Buddhist called ‘Tso Pema’, Rewalsar in Mandi District as per the Buddhist rituals.

He will always be remembered by each and every one of us here at TCV School Chauntra. Our heartfelt condolence goes to the family!

SUMMER BREAK

The school closed for summer break from 4 to 13 June 2017. Actually as per the school diary it was scheduled from 1 to 10 June 2017 but at the last minute we had to reschedule it because of the His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s summer teaching for the youth.

So the Class 9 and 10 students had to go to Dharamsala to attend His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s three days teachings at the main temple Tsuglakhang from 5 to 7 June 2017. The students who stayed back in the school were taken to picnic by their respective Home mothers as per their own choice of the picnic spots. This is mainly done so that children who have come from far-away places and who are not able to go to their home to see their parents do not feel home sick. The children for sure thoroughly enjoyed their picnic.

Thanks to the school and to the home mothers for organizing and arranging such wonderful activity to the children!

Kagyur Reading

As per Buddhist calendar, every fourth month is observed as ‘Saka Dawa’ which began from 26 May 2017. It is one of the most sacred Buddhist festivals in which we celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha Shakyamuni. The merits of any good deeds that you perform during this month are considered to be multiplied as one hundred thousand times and vice versa.

So every year during this month we do ‘Kangyur’ reading for two days which means we do reading of the Tibetan Buddhist sacred texts to remove and protect ourselves from all evil and bad spirits and most importantly purify one’s own mind and deeds. ‘Kangyur’ or ‘Translated Words’ consists of work in about 108 volumes supposed to have spoken by the Buddha himself.

The Staff read the scriptures in the school chapel where as the students above class 7 read them in their own respective classes. The main organizer of this event is the school Cultural Committee who shoulders the responsibilities of the refreshment and all.

Inter House Cultural Song and Dance Competition

Inter House Cultural Song and Dance Competition is indeed one of the biggest and the most awaited event in all the TCV schools. So here the final day has arrived to show case the talents and the preparation by each Houses.

The Chief Guest for the event was the Honorable President of TCV Schools, Mr. Thupten Dorjee accompanied by the TCV Education Director, the Village Director and the school Principals from the neighboring schools.

This year the three esteemed judges were from TIPA & Tibetan Institute for Performing Arts. It had surely been a very difficult task for the judges to make the decisions as each and every item presented were outstanding. It was mandatory for every House to prepare four items each & two dances, one duet and a group song.

This year more than 500 students participated in this activity. The House masters’ and the students’ hard work was apparently visible during the real contest but as it is a competition one had to win and one to lose.

Thus this year the overall result was as follow

The first position was bagged by Triral House

The second position was bagged by Songtsen House

The third position was bagged by Trisong House

The fourth position was bagged by Nyatri House.

VISIT OF THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR, MR. SONAM SICHOE

We are very fortunate to have the honourable Education Director of TCV School, Mr. Sonam Sichoe for three days’ short visit to our school. During his stay he had a very busy schedule throughout the days. He had different meetings and sessions with different sections and departments.

 Day 1 : Meeting with the children of Class 7 and above. (Evening)

Day 2 : Meeting with the Math teachers (2nd period)

Meeting with the Primary teachers (3rd /4th periods)

Meeting with the Teaching Department (6 p.m.)

Day 3 : Meeting with the Home mothers (1st / 2nd periods)

Meeting with the Student Council (4th period)

He reminded everyone of us about our duties and responsibilities and inspired us to work harder keeping in mind the aims and objectives of TCV Schools. He also explained his purpose of his visit to the school. In short it was a successful and a constructive visit.

CLASS 10 TREKKING

"Trekking is a form of walking, undertaken with the specific purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. It usually takes place on trails in areas of relatively unspoiled wilderness."

Every year our school organizes a trekking program especially for the students of class 10 and the activity was carried out successfully on 29 and 30 April 2017. The children were accompanied by their class and the subject teachers. This year once again they chose Billing for their camping spot and they stayed overnight there.

Billing is a popular site for the paragliding for the both the Indians and the visitors from all over the world. It is located at 14 km north of Bir at an elevation of 2400 metres. Bir is a small village located on the west of Jogindernagar Valley in Himachal Pradesh in the north of India. It contributes endless beauty to the land of Himachal. The most prominent spot under this valley is the Billing.

Basically a trekking can be an intense physical exercise and a unique raw learning experience of handling difficult situations and circumstances. As presumed it was an adventurous and a memorable trip filled with fun and laughter mixed with hard work and challenges for the students as well as for the teachers. Students were able to seek first hand experiences with joy and had great time exploring various unexplored environment and wilderness.
